Introducing UV-K5 Version 0.3Q (Stable version, added FT8 QSO)

Introducing UV-K5 Version 0.3Q (Stable version,  added FT8 QSO)

Version 0.3Q is mostly the same as version 0.3C.
If you are already using 0.3C and do not plan to run FT8, no update is required.
Since 0.3C was tested by several beta testers and there were no major problems, we only changed the name to the stable version 0.3Q.

Please check the link below for features added in 0.3

This document explains how to communicate with FT8 on UV-K5.

1.About using FT8 in UV-K5
UV-K5 can receive SSB (DSB). However, SSB transmission is not possible.
If you set the UV-K5 to SSB mode and speak while holding the PTT, you will probably be able to receive reception from other SSB radios.

But that's not SSB mode. When transmitting in FM mode, it is received by the SSB radio.
The frequency needs to be changed slightly on the receiving end. (depends on FM Devaition)

Therefore, the FT8 protocol was implemented in a digital manner rather than in voice mode. This is similar to FT8 and WSPR beacon implementation using DDS chips such as SI5351.

Therefore, the WSJT-X program had to be modified and you must reinstall the attached WSJT-X to operate FT8 mode using UV-K5.

2.WSJT-X Install and setup
Download and install the program from the link below.

WSJT-X for UV-K5 Source code

If WSJT-X is already installed on your computer, you can uninstall it.
This is because only a few features have been added based on the latest version, 2.6.1.

Click the Audio tab page in the Setting menu of WSJT-X.
Please enable Send sym data to UDP server as shown below.
If you set the settings as shown below, when WSJT-X transmits, the transmission information will be delivered to DigiManager.

3. Execute UV-K5 DeigiManager

Select the serial port connected to UV-K5 and click the ‘Connect’ button.

You just need to run UV-K5 DigiManager to use FT8 with UV-K5.

Afterwards, you can use WSJT-X for FT8 communication.

4. Additional information

 In version 0.3Q, FT8 supports only 2m (144Mhz) and 70cm(430Mhz).

If you try FT8 on another version, it probably won't transmit.

Comments

  1. I tried it today with an AIOC (https://github.com/skuep/AIOC) and it seems to work. No one else was on 2m FT8 though, will have to ask someone to test. I wonder if the C-board could be used as an audio and serial interface, similar to the AIOC?

  4. I must have missed something... How can I get into that "Ready FT8" mode in 0.3Q? I'm probably stupid...

  5. Hi! Very useful site!
I've set audio settings as it presented here (with choice of audio input and output) and I'm using UV-K5 DigiManager. The problem is that WSJT opened microphone and monitored all sounds in room. If I've disabled microphone in Windows settings - there are not any data on waterfall page. It looks like there is not any data thru UDP port. And second question - Should I use special firmware for UV_K5 for work with FT8?
    Thanks!

  6. Is there a way to integrate with Chirp. The firmware is not detected in chirp for modifying memory settings via PC.

  7. Tried this firmware with a SG lab 23 cm transverter (2 Watts) and got over 45 km no problem. Works well.

  8. Thanks for your work. Please tell me:
    1) how to reset the system on your firmware? After flashing the firmware, I don’t see a reset option in the menu.
    2) I have WLN KD-C1 Plus walkie-talkies, but I can’t communicate with them when I adjust the frequency - I hear them, but I can’t say anything (can’t hear on WLN KD-C1 Plus) CTC/DCS is there
DEC D054N - also CTC/DCS ENC. But when I set these parameters on K5, I don’t hear anything at all.

    1. WLN KD-C1 Plus - I figured it out, this radio has a “Special Codec”. Disabled it and everything works.
