Introduction to UV-K5 HF 0.5 (Fullband receive version)
This is an introduction to UV-K5 HF full-band reception firmware 0.4HF using SI4732-A10.
This version is released separately from the existing UV-K5 CEC firmware version. because space is needed to store a large PATCH file to use SI4732-A10's SSB.
This article only describes the features newly added in Version 0.5.
Please check the links below for full features.
How to modify your hardware
Version 0.3HF (Most feature descriptions are provided)
Version 0.41HF (Description of Band plan function and Dual RX function)
1.Shortcut key description
After several version changes, the shortcut key was confirmed.
1.1 Frequency fine tuning (Under 1Khz)
Number keys 1 and 4 can be used to change the frequency in 10Hz increments.
Although it is a BFO adjustment, the BFO is reflected in reverse, so it has the same effect as changing the frequency below 1Khz in SSB mode.
1.2 Change frequency step
When you press the STAR(*) button, the step changes.
Step is underlined at the top of the screen and below the main frequency.
(50Khz Step)
1.3 Band Plan
When you press number key 0, Band Plan is displayed. Please check the link below for Band Plan related functions.
Version 0.41HF (Description of Band plan function and Dual RX function)
1.4 Mode Change
Pressing the 'F' key changes the mode.
Short press 'F' to change to AM<->FM or LSB->USB->CW.
Press and hold 'F' to change to AMorFM <-> SSB or CW mode.
2.Direct Input Frequency
If you press any number except the above shortcut key, direct frequency input mode will be activated.
Enter the desired frequency.
When you press the Exit button, the direct frequency input mode is canceled.
3. Changed features
- Frequency step changes from large to small increments.
(1Mhz -> 500Khz -> 100Khz -> 50Khz -> 10Khz -> 5Khz -> 1Khz)
- When you select a band from the Band Plan menu, the mode appropriate for that band is automatically set.
- Unused and unnecessary menus have been removed. (Main VFO Mode, not HF Receive mode) : U.INFO, Key.LCK (If you press the F key for a long time in main vfo mode, Lock will be activated or deactivated, so it has been removed from the menu)
4.Download
Great job! I like it ;-)

Just brilliant, nice work. Thanks
ReplyDeleteGreat job, I'm really enjoying it. You can support 128k eeprom (M24M01 - 999 channels) and CHIRP software. Thanks. 73.
ReplyDeleteI also ask you to add a version with 24c512 or higher, thanks)
DeleteHello
ReplyDeleteThe speaker is very close to the electronic components of the board.
How the BFO stability problem was solved. The frequency changes when you move your hand closer.
+1 to chirp module and bigger eeprom support (in my case I use a 24C512, but eventually I'll upgrade). Fantastic work! 73 de IU3POA

ReplyDeleteHello! Great idea with si4732. SSB lacks gain. Make register control Automatic gain control max gain
ReplyDeleteI have started to analyze the 0.5 CEC firmware and try to write a chirp plugin. It's not working yet: https://git.okoyono.de/klaute/uvk5-cec-chirp-driver

DeleteThanks Kai, that is what i missing!
DeleteAlso a 999 channel version for eeprom upgrades .... ;)
Please do not post any errors to this blog, i will not read them anyways Alfred. My chirp module is in development and does not belong to the CEC firmware. My github repository has a issue-section. If you really need to let me know that you have problems using my software - which is not ready to use yet - dot it in my repository.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mod, great work! I have installed it, the chip resets, but I'm unable to tune any frequency, pressing the side buttons exit HF mode and bring me back to normal mode. Any idea what I've done wrong here?
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteWhen you turn on the radio, the si4732 chip is immediately supplied with power. When you hold down the "0" key, short wave reception is turned on; the supply voltage is also present on the chip. When exiting this mode, power supply voltage is not supplied to the chip.
Is it possible to prevent the chip from being supplied with power when the radio is turned on?

ReplyDeleteI have the problem that when I keep pressing the 0 button, the display just says Wait. and then the device freezes. Everything is installed properly and tested for continuity.

Just al the left of the bottom of the connection to BK1080 must be a 1k resistor that is missing. The resistor connects with pin8.
DeleteIt's a simple 1kohm resistor in serial communications lines of the chip. I lost one of mine during BK1080 removal. Then I broke the other during repairing the first. I've almost got crazy. When I studied electrical scheme, I found where could be the problem. It's there or in RST pin. I discarded RST, then I traced the problem to this lines. Another problem is a fail connections between lines on the main board of BK1080 and the new circuit, because copper lines don't end in the border. There is a thin line of plastic that avoid good connections with solder. I use a small piece of copper hair cable to better the connections.
DeleteIch habe auch alles gemessen alle Kontakte vOm Gerät zum Board ect. Ich suche seit Tagen nach Lösungen, aber nichts gefunden oder hilft. Ich glaube langsam das es an Si4732 liegt 🤬

ReplyDeleteIt stops at the "Wait" screen and cannot proceed any further. What is the solution?
ReplyDeleteIch habe noch keine Lösung gefunden 😞
DeleteFlash IJV an use the Reset All function in the Service Menu.
DeleteFlash CEC_05 again and try it.
Funktioniert auch nicht
DeleteThis is my close friend's equipment. It hasn't been resolved yet.
DeleteOk, but please tell me does IJV work?
DeleteDie IJV Firmware läuft..
DeleteNein, weder der VFO noch All Reset der IJV hat geholfen. Ich habe auch jede Firmware Version versucht... von 0.1 - 0.51
DeleteCan anyone let me know what software needed to read and write memories Struggling at the moment with 0.41
ReplyDeleteTicking sound makes almost impossible to hear something in low bands. Could be possible a key stroke that stops Smeter or other things to reduce ticking sound on demand?. When push 0 key to access bands ticking sound reduces a lot... I propose 0 long stroke that stops or starts Smeter... In high bands doesn't bothered...
ReplyDeletepoderia adicionar o analisador de espectro igual ao egzumer...
ReplyDeleteThat would be an option, its Spectrum Analyser + Search function
DeleteGreat Firmware! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteQuick Question: Which CPS is recommended to change e. g. Memory Channels? Is the original CPS OK ("Portable radio customer programming software V 1.0.38) ?
DeleteHi: I made a mod of Chirp driver to work with this firmware. Not all configs work, but is possible to download and upload memories and most of the configs. Also, it is possible to change initial freq of HF radio. Feel free to probe it. Link:

Is it possible to add compatibility to the M24M02-DRMN6TP EEPROM ?
ReplyDeleteThis eeprom would give the one feature that is missing now, 11.000+ memory channels.
Have already installed it and waiting to test..
First and foremost I want to thank you for a great job! Your interface is probably the best among modifications for UV-K5 for HF reception. And there is a big request - make a small step 50 or 100Hz (now you have it 10 Hz), or maybe even to be able to adjust through the menu, for example 5-10-50-100 Hz. 10 Hz is very slow and uncomfortable.

ReplyDeleteCould someone advise us on what STMicroelectronics serial EEPROMs are compatible with the UV-K5 hardware? The firmware is pretty big, and I imagine the 512Kbit, 1Mbit or 2Mbit versions will need to replace what is in the radio. What model/speed/size are compatible? And, can the swap of the EEPROM be done and still allow for downloading (i.e. is the bootloader in the processor)? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe firmware is interesting, thanks. However, there are 2 drawbacks:
ReplyDeleteThe main one is very low gain in SSB mode;
Minor - in AM mode the bandwidth is not adjusted. I really hope that someday this will be fixed. It’s better to let the uv-k5 hiss like the ATS-100 than barely whisper, like now.
Using this firmware in the 0.51hf version. Everything works great but just a minor annoyance is that in the FM broadcast band the stations sound as if the signal is overloaded. My mod board is the version 2.5 which has a completely separate antenna which feeds the am input of the si4732. The fm input of the si4731 is via the original unmodified Quansheng antenna circuit. What's going on with this? The si4732 should be able to provide a clean broadcast signal just as the original 8pin Quansheng fm broadcast chip did .
ReplyDeleteIs it limited by software or is it a hardware issue?
On research I've discovered that commercial fm broadcast stations sound overloaded if listened to in WFM rather than BFM (broadcast FM).
Does CEC hf firmware not support BFM? or am I barking up the wrong tree?
The reason for your problem lies in the very large difference in volume in different modes of operation of the si4732 with this firmware. In order to make the SSB sound loud enough, the Chinese added an operational amplifier to the modification board. In the SSB mode, this amplifier eliminates the problem, but in the rest (AM/FM) it creates a new one (overloading the switch of the UV-K5 receivers). Now that the Chinese have produced such a variety of boards with stupid “crutches”, in order to correct the whole variety of “crooked solutions”, the author of the firmware needs to release at least 2 versions of corrections. One for those who have a modification board without an op-amp and another for those who have a board with an amplifier :)
DeleteThank you for the explanation. I also experience this issue. I hope author will fix this soon! Best 73

ReplyDeleteThe author of the firmware doubted that anyone would use his brainchild on long waves. I demonstrate how his mod works on LW and at the same time ask to make a firmware update containing a tuning resolution of 9 kHz. And of course with a gain correction in SSB mode

First of all thank you to the author for such a great firmware! I'm experiencing a bug after upgrading to this firmware: PTT from handsets is not working anymore. I have tried 4 different handsets and all work well with unmodified K5 units but not after PCB v2.5 + CEC 0.51 firmware. So I guess it's a firmware issue. I will highly appreaciate if author could release a new firmware version fixing all reported bugs. TNX and 73!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the firmware. Is it possible to add 0.1 kHz (100 Hz) tuning step for SSB mode?

ReplyDeleteI have just upgraded one of my UV-5R Plus radios to use the HF board, installed the 0.51HF firmware and have now got a small issue. Everything on HF seems to work but will test more tomorrow, on the normal V/U frequencies, again all seems fine, until I look at memories. Now I know a few people have posted CHIRP modules, but I can't get them to work, I found one that kicks an error saying a /tmp/ file is missing, and the other only shows 145 memories in CHIRP although the radio still has all 199? In the past for CEC I have used uvk5_IJV_v2.9R4_JH11.py with no issues, but now I have one. On memories that have a repeater offset + or -, although they show in CHIRP, the offset direction doesn't get to the radio. I have tried with all available CHIRP modules that sort of work, but none show the offset. So, the only solution I have found so far is go into the radio settings on the required channel, the offset frequency is still there but you have to add the offset direction + or - in menu 10, then go to menu 17 and re-save the memory, then is sticks, but if you save in CHIRP to edit something and re-push to the radio the changes do seem to stick. But as I have around 100 of my memories with a repeater offset, this is a real pain. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, did you find a solution for it? Any help gratefully received.
ReplyDeleteUsing version 0.51HF with a board and absolutely loving it! What a great upgrade! Any chance of seeing a built in CW decoder in the future?
